How to Make Whitney Houston's Fairy Godmother Costume - It's not Impossible, it's actually pretty easy!

I have gotten so many requests from fellow 1997 Cinderella fans to make them the Whitney Houston Fairy Godmother costume I made my daughter a few years back. But since I only make these types of looks for my kids for fun and don't mass produce them, I want you to have the tools to make it yourself if you'd like to rock her epic look!

(I'm still not over the fact that @cinderellamusical featured us and both @whitneyhouston and @paolomontalban reshared our design)

First, here's what you need (some items include affiliate links. If you are able to purchase via the links, your support in that way helps me continue to bring tips and tricks to you for free - I thank you in advance :)

What You'll Need...

Instructions...

  • Step 1 - Make sure you have all the pieces and most importantly a hot glue gun. This is a no-sew costume so hot glue is a must :)

  • Step 2 - Once you have a bodysuit that fits the person wearing the costume, I recommend starting with the cape. Have them try on the body suit and create a slit in the top of your shoulder on the backside, right below the top horizontal hem that's wide enough for the elastic to go through. The cape is a separate piece that fits in through this hole when you wear it to keep it up, so this is a very important step.

  • Step 3 - Once the slits have been made, cut enough elastic to go from your underarm to the top of your shoulder for each arm. Basically they'll eventually be circles that your arm will fit through when you put on the outfit.

  • Step 4 - To assemble the cape's collar, fit the gold foam around your neck to see how many pieces of foam you'll need to cut. I recommend cutting one side of it out then putting additional pieces on top of it so you have glitter on both sides and can glue it together to make it extra sturdy.

  • Step 5 - You'll need to grab your gold sequin curtains next and measure out how long you want your cape to be. I recommend gluing down the inside top onto your collar first, then cut a semicircle however long you want it to be (give yourself about a half inch extra when you cut it so you can glue the fabric onto each other at the edges so it doesn't fray or rip).

  • Step 6 - Glue the edges over towards the backside to create a finished edge of your cape.

  • Step 7 - Glue your elastic pieces that are going over your arm into a circle and glue them to the collar's inside bottom edges (at the spots that align with where the slits would be when you wear it).

  • Step 8 - Add the small elastic rings to the edge of your cape so you can wear them on your fingers. You'll need to cut them to size and glue them in a circle then onto the cape.

  • Step 9 - Glue the circles and rhinestones in a pattern that matches Whitney's :) I recommend using this photo as a guide.

  • Step 10 - Fish the arm bands through the shoulder slits when you put your arm through the bodysuit. Do the same on both sides and zip up your bodysuit. It's possible you're going to have a blast channeling your best Whitney :)
